The Waiting is the Hardest Part
My experience at HSS has been wonderful. Hard to say that about major surgery, but it is true. Since they pulled the epidural I have not taken any pain medication. I was left with some post-anesthesia nausea but they took care of it. Every staff person has been caring and delightful.
And my room is insane. Huge wirh a beautiful view.
I joked that the small refrigerator was a wine fridge.
The surgery went very well. I opted to not have the plastic surgeon reroute the nerves because it would have meant cutting into the skin graft, which at least for me, does not heal well. With meditation I have been able to keep the phantom pain mostly under control, and I believe as I get more active it will subside.
The orthopedic surgeon said my bone quality was good, and I should be able to start gradually putting weight on the residual leg in about four weeks. I will see him around then to confirm. It might be a bit longer but I am prepared for that.
We did not have much free time this trip, but we did squeeze in some time for a couple of friends. Next trip will be even shorter; likely fly up and back the same day.
The hotel, while not bad, left much to be desired for someone in a wheelchair. I plan to write them a thoughtful, respectful letter. It is associated with the surrounding hospitals, so they really need to do better.
While,my stay at HSS has been one of my better hospital stays, I can't wait to get back to my home and my kitties.
Jerry, as always, has been here for me. Cappucinos delivered, and a good morning and good night kiss. Mostly we watched videos on our respective devices, but just having him here with me was a comfort.
In contrast to my first night here, last night I had many hours of restful sleep and I feel wonderful, although a little anxious for them to throw me out.
